A practical checklist for first-year orientation
A practical first-year orientation checklist that extends welcome week into a structured first six weeks to build belonging and retention.
Orientation is easy to plan as an event and hard to plan as an arc. The checklist below is built around the second framing: not what happens in welcome week, but what carries the welcome into the weeks where students decide whether they belong.
Before week one. Map the first six weeks, not just orientation day. Decide what each week needs to communicate, and which audiences need a different version.
Weeks one and two. Keep one clear channel of what matters now. Make belonging events easy to find and relevant to each student. Open a low-pressure way for students to say how they are going.
Weeks three to six. This is the census and first-assessment stretch, where confidence dips. Keep the guidance steady, keep support one tap away, and watch cohort-level signals rather than chasing individuals.
The aim throughout is continuity. A student should never feel that the institution showed up for a week and then went quiet.
